Hello everyone…

A Sam Koontz guitorgan has recently came into my possession. The real kicker… it works. It operates with a pedal. It sounds great.

Does anybody have more information on his guitar organ synthesizer?

I actually inherited the guitar from my pap. I wish I could be of more help! I too am searching constantly for information - especially because the volume pedal recently caught on fire !!

P.S. love twin peaks, mr lynch

Hello - Great write up, I'm always looking for more info on Sam. I am the timc100 who owns the two guitars in the last picture. I'd like everyone to rest easy knowing they don't live in my kids room and are safe, restored (the 7-string had been cleaned up and looks like new since that pic was taken), and played. I am studying with Jack Cecchini who was a dear friend of Sam's and always played his instruments and I purchased both of these from him.

Thanks Tim, and thanks for letting us know they are safe and sound :-). I've emailed you a message about a friend that could potentially help with more information about Sam.

I took lessons as a teenager at Iorio music next door to Sam's shop in Linden. After my lesson I would go visit Sam and he'd stop to show me the amazing woods he had, "violin wood" he called it. Inevitably he'd ask me to run across the street and buy him the Antony y Cleopatra cigars he loved. He was a master craftsman. It was a sad thing to hear how he ended. RIP Sam. I still have the pick he gave me with his name on it.

Tim... thanks for sharing. Please look me up if you ever decide to sell one of them? It must have been great studying with Jack. Thanks. Dave

Tim: I'm Tim Olsen, editor of American Lutherie magazine. I'd like to use that photo in an upcoming issue which mentions Sam Koontz. We've been publishing for 50 years, but we are non-profit so we do not pay. But photo would be credited to you. contact me: tim@luth.org

I have my father's Standel (the guitar on the right last photo at couch), I believe it to be one of the prototypes built for NAMM in '67(?) . I think there were 2? Control are on the pickguatd but the gold bridge is different. It is very worn but I would love an appraisal. Is there anyone who does this (i did email archtop.com) Thank you!

I don't know anything about Sam Koontz guitorgans, but I did work with Harvey Thomas long ago and he was a player and builder. There's a little bit of info on my website. You will have to wade through my good-old-days musings to find it: https://www.tuba2.com/harvey/timstory.htm
