Dan Smith, a man who wore many magical hats at Fender and played a key role resuscitating the company after the CBS years, had some “not so Fender” ideas in the mid 1980s. While not all of his ideas were winners, Dan was a legend and a short list of his accomplishments include:
I have three Fender Performers and they are incredible.... The dual coil humbuckers can be switched to single coil giving them a wide range of tonalities from a classic Strat sound to a Les Paul. They also feature a dbx as well as a fender system 1 bridge.
I also have a katana which I believe was the first guitar offender built with a fused neck. It also has dual switched humbuckers but they are much hotter than the ones on the performer. It is next to impossible to find a Katana but you can buy Performers.
